Midnight Conquest – Audiobook Sample
Blurb & Extras:
Broderick MacDougal‘s guise as a Gypsy to mask his vampiric identity eventually becomes a quest to disappear from the heartaches forged by revenge. Running from his past is no longer an option when his old Clan rival ensnares him in a trap using an enticing widow. Broderick is compelled to discover if she is bait or an accomplice, and the cinnamon-haired beauty is his next conquest.
Widow of an abusive husband, Davina Stewart-Russell clings to the only image that gave her strength during those dark times–the Gypsy rogue who stole her heart as a youth. After nine years, she is finally face-to-face with him again, but reality clashes with fantasy as she is confronted with Broderick's passionate pursuit of her.
When Davina's past comes back to haunt her, Broderick is forced to reveal a dark secret worse than anything Davina thought possible. The challenge put before them has fatal risks and neither of them are prepared for the sacrifices expected of them both for the sake of eternal love.

Author Notes
Vampires, vampires, vampires. I just can't get enough of them! I talked a little about how this book was started on the Bonded By Blood Vampire Chronicles page (see my author notes), so this was the book that started it all. Broderick has taken on a life of his own and has prompted me to connect a lot of other vampire stories I've crafted through the years. This has now developed into a series of books that will span about 600 years. Since I love historical fiction, I thought this would be a great way to explore some of my favorite time periods.
MIDNIGHT CONQUEST was written over 20 years ago as a single concept and though the original storyline is still within the pages of this tale, so much has changed and I believe it has become a better story for it. I submitted it to several publishing houses, big and small, and eventually The Wild Rose Press offered me a contract. I put my poor editor through hell during my changes (Eilidh MacKenzie – pronounced AY-lee) and eventually I just felt that TWRP was not the way I should go, so I paid my fee and pulled the contract. Let me say MIDNIGHT CONQUEST would not be the book it is today if it wasn't for the valuable input of Ms. MacKenzie. She pushed me to see things I never took notice of during my crafting of the story. Though I knew a lot about vampire lore, I had a lot to learn about writing fiction. I chose to self-publish MIDNIGHT CONQUEST because it was my “baby” and I just wanted to give the book a personal touch that any publisher would not be able to provide, so it's not to say TWRP did a bad job in handling my novel. I'm a bit of a control freak, so I felt uncomfortable with someone else putting my baby out to pasture. The entire journey has been very educational and life-changing.
Through this journey, I have also discovered that I am not actually a romance novelist as I originally thought. It appears that the plot development, story layers and characters I weave into my stories are the focus of my tales, not the romance. Even though there are strong romantic elements to my stories, the question is where the focus lies…and in romance novels, the focus on the story resolution is in the romance betwixt the two main characters. Those are not my stories.
The best example I hope to aspire toward is Terry Goodkind‘s Sword of Truth Series which has very strong romantic elements between Richard and Kahlan. Their love is the motivating factor for the development of the stories and their resolutions, but the plot of Richard's journey in discovering who he truly is and the resolutions of that journey are what's at the heart of these fantasy fiction novels. So, in truth, my novels are paranormal fiction or fantasy fiction with strong romantic elements. But I classify them under Paranormal Romance because, well…they sell better that way. At least for now. 😉
